OPUS - A Visual Essay

A brief history of SCHILLER and an in depth view into the making of the #1 album.

Featuring Anna Netrebko and Hélène Grimaud.

A Lavish World of Sound

One of the biggest names in the German pop-charts for over a decade, pivotal electronic star Schiller (aka Christopher von Deylen) releases Opus on Deutsche Grammophon’s Panorama label. Von Deylen is joined by some of classical music’s greatest names for his first album inspired by the genre, including pianists Hélène Grimaud and Lang Lang, and celebrated soprano Anna Netrebko.

Schiller first came to international prominence in the late-1990’s with his global smash Glockenspiel and has since built a devoted audience for his albums and spectacular live shows. Opus features re-workings of classical works as well as Schiller’s own compositions. It was released in Germany in August 2013 and entered the charts at #1 and is now certified Gold.

Following a massive tour of German opera houses and concert halls, culminating in sell-out shows at the Berlin Philharmonie, home of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Opus receives its full international release in spring 2014.

The album includes Anna Netrebko’s first encounter with electronic music, a beautiful reinterpretation of Edward Grieg’s “Solveig’s Song”. Opus was originally intended to be an instrumental album – but then von Deylen heard Anna Netrebko sing: “You just cannot even imagine how a person can have such a voice within them, such volume and such power in a voice, but yet utterly crisp and clear, and, in a certain way, very contained,” he says. “When I came across her voice I simply realized that she had to be a part of this.”

On its German release, Boulevard Baden called Opus “… the perfect fusion of classical music and electronic sounds,” adding that Schiller “… overcomes genre boundaries and goes again and again in search of new worlds of sound”.

Christopher von Deylen says of the album: “The classical music melodies are simply timeless and have a tremendous emotional vitality. At the same time, when you add the modern electronic sounds of Schiller, which also have their own unique energy, then that combination of both, together, reinforces the truly emotional power of these melodies even more.”

CHRISTOPHER VON DEYLEN’s musical language knows no bounds, which may explain why, as SCHILLER, he’s achieved such huge success over the last 15 years. His endless musical and visual curiosity has won him legions of fans around the world.

With anthems like DAS GLOCKENSPIEL – a UK top-5 hit – SCHILLER creates electronica with an emotional core. Since he started taking his live shows on the road, SCHILLER has made a worldwide name for himself. His sell-out tours have delighted hundreds of thousands of fans with their stunning and sophisticated use of surround-sound and breathtaking, state-of-the-art light shows.

Always seeking out new influences and ideas, SCHILLER has already looked to the classical world for inspiration. One of SCHILLER’S best-selling tracks, EIN SCHÖNER TAG – ONE FINE DAY – samples the famous aria of the same name from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, while a productive collaboration with star pianist Lang Lang led to the hit single TIME FOR DREAMS.

Since then, VON DEYLEN’s desire to take SCHILLER further down the classical road has kept on growing. In early 2013 he traveled to the mountains of California and immersed himself in their natural beauty, using the energy the landscape gave him to create his latest album, OPUS, a seamless blend of classical and electronic soundworlds.

An instant hit in his native Germany, OPUS not only went straight to No.1, it sold more units in its first week than any other debut classical album and received GOLD STATUS only a couple of weeks after its release.

A voyage of discovery into the world of classical music, OPUS reveals an exciting new side to this artist, yet there’s no mistaking the unique SCHILLER sound.
